Skelmanthorpe has a rich history. We have The Textile Heritage Centre in Queen Street. The centre is located in a weavers cottage, one up, one down as it was in 1900. For more information click https://www.facebook.com/SkelmanthorpeTexileHeritageCentre/

Skelmanthorpe is also the place in which the Chartist Movements Flag of Freedom was made following the Peterloo Massacre.

THE FREEDOM FLAG
This flag was made as a reaction to the 1819 Peterloo Massacre in Manchester. It was often hidden from the authorities.
