What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis using a paddle (like a large table tennis bat), plastic ball with holes and a court about the size of a badminton court. It is hugely popular in America and is growing rapidly in the UK, Asia, Spain, Italy and Mexico. People of all ages play pickleball because it is easy to play, sociable, and less stressful on muscles, tendons and joints.
Pickleball at Thongsbridge
Pickleball is a new venture for Thongsbridge and is currently being trialled until September 2025 by a group from Skelmanthorpe U3A. We are currently recruiting into the trial- both newcomers and those who already play the game. We will ask you to become pickleball members of both the tennis club and the U3A so that you can pay a significantly lower rate than non-members.
What you get for your membership fee
Thongsbridge supplies all the equipment and you just need to bring your paddle. Newcomers can use the spare paddles we have and the club has paddles for sale in the shop. Members have access to indoor and outdoor courts (both using temporary lines at the moment), changing rooms, sauna andnot forgetting, of course, the all-important café!
For an extra fee, pickleball members can also use the tennis courts, gym, fitness studio and, shortly, the padel courts.
Membership of Skelmanthorpe U3A gives you access to a range of activities at no or very low cost.
Times and Costs
We currently play indoors at Thongsbridge every Monday and Thursday from 2pm to 4pm.
Pickleball membership costs £40 a year and indoor court fees are £4 per person for each 2 hour session.
There are no membership costs for existing tennis members.
We’re hoping to trial outdoor pickleball this summer and this will not incur any court fees (it is included within the membership).
At the moment, during the trial, members need to join the U3A as well as the tennis club at a further cost of £15 a year.
So…why not give it a try?
Just contact Nick or Jesus or the club. We have spare paddles for beginners and your first time is a free, “try before you buy” session. Once you become a member, we’ll add you to the WhatsApp group and you can sign up for sessions and keep up with developments.
